Preliminary competition was held at Stout earlier in the day and whittled down the competition to the top dozen in each the third, fourth and fifth grade. Martin said Thursday’s competition consisted of 90 students from the district. Martin added he has been helping with the competition for about seven years and would like to be able to take the top kids to a stacking competition beyond the district. It also teaches hand-eye coordination and bilateral proficiency, he said. The Silver School district has been doing this competition since 2005, according to Martin, and it gives kids who are not as athletically inclined a chance to excel at an activity. The competitor then uses the two cups on either side to break the triangular tower down into the starting formation of three cups, six cups and three cups all stacked inside of each other. The final task is to create a triangular tower of ten cups stacked atop of each other - four on the bottom, three in the second row, two in the third row and one on top with a cup standing alone on either side of the tower. The next move consists of creating two triangular formations of six cups each with three on the bottom, two on the second row and one on top - after which the competitor breaks the cups down into one tall tower of all 12 cups stacked inside of each other. Next, the competitor breaks down the triangles back into towers of three, six and three cups stacked inside of each other. Starting from the competitor’s left to right, a tower of two on the bottom and one on the top must be created, then a formation of three on the bottom, two in the second row and one on the top followed by the same formation as the left triangle on the other side. Then, each competitor must create a triangular tower out of each of the towers. To start, the 12 cups begin stacked in three towers inside of each other - one stack of three to the left, one stack of six in the middle and another of three to the right.
